Maryland Governor’s Bill Signing Ceremony for $577M HBCU Settlement

On Wednesday, 3/24/2021, Governor Larry Hogan signed SB 1 / HB 1 {Historically Black Colleges and University - Funding} into law; Senator Patterson was present to witness this historical event. 15-years in the making, this will provide our four HBCU’s in Maryland – Bowie State University, Coppin State University, Morgan State University, and the University of Maryland – Eastern Shore -- with 577,000,000 in annual state funding for the next 10 years. Beginning in 2023, each institution can use the funding in multiple areas: academic programs, scholarships, staffing and faculty development, and marketing to attract new students. In the final days of the 2020 Session, Senator Patterson was designated as Floor Leader to present the 2020 version of SB1 to the full Senate, which passed unanimously.
