About Obie Patterson

Maryland State Senator Obie Patterson District 26 (Prince George's County)

Senator Obie Patterson was first elected to the Maryland Senate in 2018 and has been a member of the Senate since January 9, 2019. He is a former member of the Maryland House of Delegates and served from 1995 to 2007.

The Senator currently holds the position of Deputy Majority Whip and is a member of the Education, Health and Environmental Affairs Committee where he also serves on two subcommittees; the Alcohol Subcommittee and the Education Subcommittee. Additionally, the Senator serves on the Joint Committee on Gaming Oversight and the Legislative Black Caucus. Senator Patterson is the Vice Chair of the Prince George’s County Senate Delegation. He is also a member of the Commission on Environmental Justice and Sustainable Communities.

Born in Lancaster, South Carolina, Senator Patterson is a graduate of Johnson C. Smith University where he received his B.S. in Biology. He attended the University of Florida and received his M.A. in Public Administration.

The Senator is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, Pi Sigma National Honor Society and a Life Member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He is a former member of the Prince George’s County Council, representing District 8, from 2010 to 2018. A member of Fort Foote Baptist Church, the Senator resides in Fort Washington and has three children and three grandchildren.

Maryland General Assembly

Obie Patterson began his service to the citizens of Maryland as Delegate Patterson from January 11, 1995 to January 10, 2007. During his tenure Delegate Patterson held various positions and served on numerous Committees and Subcommittees. A member of the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland throughout his term, Delegate Patterson served as Treasurer and was elected Chair in 2002.

The former Delegate Patterson returned to the Maryland General Assembly as Senator Patterson in January 2019. He serves as Deputy Majority Whip, Member, Education, Health and Environmental Affairs Committee and the alcohol subcommittee, and education subcommittee. He is Senate Chair, Joint Committee on Gaming Oversight, Vice Chair, Prince George’s Senate Delegation, Member, Commission on Environmental Justice and Sustainable Committee, and Member, Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland.
